Great Annual Ram Fair
C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their Great Annual Ram Fair at Longtown on Wednesday 6th October 2021, where one of the best shows of quality commercial rams of all classes was seen for many years. Buyers from all ends of the country were competing to buy the sires of next year’s lamb crop, with buyers willing to invest heavily in top quality stock. A great trade was witnessed with extreme clearance rates.
The sale was led for third year in succession by Bryden Nicolson, The Knock with the 2nd prize tup lamb, after strong competition the hammer fell at £1,400, selling to TW Hamilton & Son, Kirkton of Crawford.
Texel shearlings met a huge demand with customers galore for all classes of tups, especially for those with size, length, skins and shape. Topping at £1,000 twice, firstly for the overall champion Texel from Roderick Runciman, Allanshaws, next from Jim & Sharon Robertson, Becks.

Cross bred and other continental rams with power and shape again sold to serious demand, although smaller tups lacking power and length being very hard to place. This section was topped at £1,200 twice, firstly for the champion Crossbred ram, a powerhouse of a Beltex x tup from Messrs Ward, Whitstonehill and secondly for an unshown Beltex x from Messrs Halliday, Linnhead.

A good entry of Suffolk shearling rams and ram lambs met an animated demand surpassing all other centres and early sales, with several four-figure prices and a massive upsurge in averages and prices, with an 100% clearance rate.

A better-quality entry of Bluefaced Leicesters attracted a full ring of buyers from a wide area. Trade opened brisk from the start with the majority of shearlings selling between £400-£700 and to a top of £750 from S Mabon, Howden Farm, Jedburgh.
Ram lambs sold to £1,200 from TJ Hall & Son, Horlsey Hill Cottage, Hawick, with most of them selling between £300-£450. With again an 100% clearance of Bluefaced Leicesters.
