Longtown Ladies Sale Report

“LONGTOWN LADIES” TO 8,500 GUINEAS

The eighth annual “Longtown Ladies” sale of pedigree breeding sheep was held on Monday evening, 10th January.  There was a high quality entry which attracted much interest, both in the mart and on-line, and trade was very strong throughout, surpassing all earlier season sales.

Overall, 161 head averaged £1,035 with the 90 Texel gimmer shearlings levelling at £1,268.  51 sheep sold for 1,000 guineas or more. There was a 96% selling rate with over half the lots attracting on-line bidding on the Marteye bidding platform and 20% of the sheep were bought by these bidders. 

Usk Vale

Lot 47 sold for 8500 from Usk Vale (a Knock prefix gimmer) - sired by Garngour Alabama

Willy Davis & Paul Rowlands of Usk Vale Pedigrees from Lower Gaufron, Llandrindod Wells consigned to the sale for the first time and, although arriving too late to participate in the show, took three of the leading four prices with his Texel gimmers.  A February 2020 Knock-bred daughter of Garngour Alabama out of an Allanfauld Am The Man dam sold for 8,500gns to the Brecon Beacons based Ynystoddeb flock of A.E. Jones, Gwynfe.  She is in-lamb to Morwood Eurostar.

Usk Vale

Lot 49 sold for 5500 from Usk Vale (a Knock prefix gimmer) - sired by Sportsmans Chieftain

Second in the Usk Vale pen, and also returning to Wales, was a gimmer by Sportsman's Chieftain, from a Tophill Wall Street ewe, which was bought for 5,500gns by Carl Bellis, Tan Rallt, Peniel, Denbigh.  Another from this flock made 4,500gns; by Hexel Born To Be Wild, she went to J.D. Houghton, Isherwood, Affetside, Bury.  The Usk Vale pen of six averaged 3,700gns.

An exceptionally strong show of texels was expertly placed by James Theyer of Clanfield Texels and sponsored by William Armstrong transport.

Knap

Lot 81 Champion sold for 4500 from Robert Cockburn - Knap sired by Sportsman's Cannon Ball

Standing champion and purchased by the judge at 4,500gns was a Knap gimmer from Robert Cockburn, Hill Of Errol, Crieff.  A Sportsman's Cannonball daughter out of a Clinterty Yuga Khan dam, she is in-lamb to New View Electrifying.  Knap averaged 2,450gns for their group of four.

Milnbank

Lot 106 sold for 4800 from Robert Wilson - Milnbank sired by Ellen Valley Caesar

Third in class, from Robert Wilson's Milnbank Flock, Turriff and by Ellen Valley Caesar, a gimmer in-lamb to Harestone Eldorado made 4,800gns to Highfield Farming, Knock, Duns.

Mitchelhill

Lot 19 sold for 2100 Second Prize Texel Shearling from AJ Kennedy - Mitchelhill

Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn sold a gimmer at 2,600gns to Carl Bellis and other gimmers sold to 2,500gns Knap; 2,400gns Knap and Milnbank; 2,200gns Mitchellhill and Harestone; 2,100gns Lauder and Usk Vale; 1,800gns Haymount; 1,700gns Knap; 1,600gns (twice) Harestone and Ettrick; 1,500gns Craig Douglas and 1,400gns Orchilmore.

Drumbreddan

Lot 128 First Prize Ewe Hogg from J Hair - Drumbreddan sold for 1700

24 Texel ewe hoggs met great demand to average £853 with the trade being led at 2,100gns by the fourth prize hogg from Robert Cockburn, Knap, this sold locally to E.J.C. Dean, Kirkhouse, Brampton. The 1st prizewinner and Reserve Chamion, by Claddagh Dynamite from Danny Hair, Drumbreddan, Stranraer, sold at 1,700gns to C. Asher, Ashbourne, Derbyshire, with James Theyer, Clanfield matching this price for his Sportsman's Desert Star daughter, bought by Harry Houldey, Kirtleton, Waterbeck.  Other Texel hoggs made to 1,600gns, 1,100 and 1,000gns from Hexel; 1,400gns Glenrock and 1,000gns Clanfield.

The good annual consignments of Dutch Texel gimmers met their usual consistent trade to average £510 for eighteen, selling to 750gns from Oliver Dean, Kirkhouse, Brampton and 700gns twice from Messrs Pyman's Thacka Flock from Stainton, Penrith.

Dutch Spotted averaged £1,102 with Ali Jackson of Maulscastle's Tiptop flock selling Tiptop Dream 2, a gimmer, to J. Pullen. Lower Gaufron, Powys for 2,200gns with ewe hoggs going at 1,300gns twice.

A Badgerface gimmer from Stuart Wood, Skene Aberdeenshire sold for 1,400gns with Blue Texels from the same home at 950gns and 900gns and averaging £800.  Beltex sold to 700gns twice from the Black Jack flock of R. Williams, Huntly. Dutch Spotted cross ewe hoggs sold in pairs averaged £572 per head, topping at £720.
