Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

BREEDING SHEEP

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had a large entry of ewes with lambs at foot forward at Longtown on Tuesday 29th March 2022.  Big ewes with strong lambs getting plenty of milk were wanted, with smaller lambs harder to cash.

Topping the sale at £120 per life was 2 Texel ewes with single lambs at foot from WJ & JG Bell, Kinninghall, whose run of 23 ewes with 39 lambs at foot averaged £100 per life.

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 1,974 store hoggs, feeding ewes & cast rams at their weekly sale.

Another good show, although more second class hoggs on offer.  The usual buyers were again in attendance with all classes of hoggs very easy to sell.

Top £123 for Suffolks from Shawhill Farm, Annan, others to £109 Chirdon; Texels to £109 Ash (Cowan), £101 Auchenlosh; Beltexs to £115 Ash (Cowan); Charollais to £109 Ballaguinnea Big; Greyfaces to £121 New Dorryfield, £109 Chirdon; Cheviot Mules to £93 Douglas Hall; North Cheviots to £95 & £92 Priesthaugh; Hampshire to £81 Upper Senwick.

Hill hoggs to £119 & £91 for Blackfaces from Townshields, others to £93 Shawhill; Cheviots to £100, £97 Blakehopeburnhaugh, £94 Twislehope; Swaledales to £76 Nether House; Herdwicks to £59, £54, £52 Row Head.

Feeding ewes (182) a massive trade. Top £182 for a Texel from Coolingel; Leicesters to £152 New Dorryfield. Hill ewes to £129 for Cheviots from Hopsrigg, £123 Coolingel; Blackfaces to £93 Coolingel, who also sold Swaledales to £65.

Cast rams to £163 for Cheviot from Bowan Hill, others to £146, £124 Coolingel; Texels to £122 Bowan Hill; Blackfaces to £112 Bowan Hill.
