Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their weekly sale of 10,757 store lambs and feeding ewes at Longtown on Tuesday 18th October 2022.

More lambs and more buyers present, trade was sharper on the week.

Top £124 and £101 for Texels from Welldon, £102 High House, £99 Ghyll Head; Suffolks to £116, £110 from Priesthaugh; Beltex to £101 High House, £99 Errington; Greyfaces to £94 Woodhall, £89 High House & Brieredge; Cheviot Mules to £91 High House; Romneys to £65 Castlemilk; Hampshires to £87 Barnhill; Swaledales to £57, £50 Hesleywell.

Feeding ewes (481) another strong trade. Top £92 for Texels from Ridley Farm; Greyfaces to £75 Waterhead of Dryffe, who sold Cheviot Mules at £75. Hill ewes to £79 for Cheviots from Windyhaugh; Blackfaces to £57 Ramshope; Swaledales to £47 East Stobbylea; Herdwicks to £41 Barkbeth. Cast rams to £80 for Blackfaces from Brieredge.

It was the annual show and sale of Blackfaces on behalf of the Blackface Sheep Society, where there was an entry of 3,020. A good offering found strong lambs very dear, with smaller lambs as they were. Judging was in the capable hands of Hugh Hamilton, whose awards were as follows:

3rd - Messrs Murray, West Deanraw - £77

At the special show and sale of Cheviots, 3,112 forward. Top lambs dearer but smaller types cheaper on the week. Again, Hugh Hamilton was the judge, whose awards were as follows:

The dispersal of 458 Blackface regular ages ewes from SG & GC Blowing, Eweslees met strong demand, selling to higher rates than most centres. Gimmers to £72 twice, others to £58. Ewes to £70, £68, £64 (x2), £62, £60, £54.

The late sale of breeding rams seen quality Texel rams, with power & tight skins met spirited bidding, regularly making £500-£700.
