Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 1,519 store hoggs, feeding ewes and cast rams at Longtown on Tuesday 11th April 2023. Another excellent show forward, more buyers, trade unbelievably dear at the highest rates ever recorded at Longtown.

Top £135, £131 for Texels from Foregirth, £133 Longrigg, £129 Stockasteads; Beltex to £117 Keskadale Hill; Suffolks to £108 Whitchester; Greyfaces to £119 East Nethershield, £113 Foregirth; North Cheviots to £123 Commonside, £111 Cumstone; Hill Cheviots to £113 Mainstay Farming; Dutch Spotted to £91 Keskadale Hill; Blackfaces to £99 Glenshanna, £95 Laughtmuirside; Swaledale to £78 Coatlith Hill; Herdwicks to £69 Keskadale Hill; Shetlands to £76 Treaton Farm, who also sold Easycares to £87.

Feeding ewes (189) still very dear and short. Top £159 for Texels from Stockasteads; Leicesters to £94 Coatlith Hill; North Cheviots to £122 Alton, £17 Milsington; Greyfaces to £85 Collin Bank. Hill ewes to £81 for Blackfaces from Collin Bank; Cheviots to £66 Milsington. Cast rams sold to £166 for a Texel from Aldery Terrace, who also sold Leicesters at £118; Cheviots to £97 Archbank.

A similar show of ewes with lambs at foot, met keen demand with many purchasers going home empty handed. Selling to a top of £118 a life for first time consignor Caleb Todhunter, Greyrigg House for a quality Beltex x shearling and single lamb, many more are required every week to satisfy demand.
