Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 7,061 store lambs at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 10th October 2023.

A smaller but better-quality show of lambs, more buyers from Shropshire, Dorset and Wales, trade very similar on the week.

Top £118 for 80 Suffolk crosses from Tarrasfoot, Canonbie, others to £111 Cragg Farm; Beltex to £106 Bushfield, £105 Cragg; Texels to £114 West Rennington, £106 The Height; Lleyns to £102 & £97 The Height; Cheviot Mules to £97 Skelfhill, £88 Bradley (Acton), £86 Solwaybank; Greyfaces to £89 Englishtown, £80 Stonehouse; Easycares to £78 Bradley; Swaledales to £51 Laverhay.

Feeding ewes (542) a very good trade. Top £114 for Texel from Kinrive, £112 Barkbeth; Greyfaces to £91 Breconside; Suffolks to £78 High Hertimage. Hill ewes to £68 form Cheviots from Enzieholm; Blackfaces to £52 Kinrive & High Hermitage, who also sold Herdwicks to £45. Cast rams to £120 for Texels from Dale House.

It was the annual show and sale of Blackface lambs on behalf of the Blackface Sheep Breeders. Judge for the day was Norman Douglas of Catslackburn, who awards were as follows:

1st GM & C Walton, Allensgreen £98
2nd Brieredge Farm, Bellingham £71
3rd TN Cavers & Co, Sorbie £62

Other prices were £89 West Deanraw, £81 Wooplaw, £78 Lampert. Trade in general was similar on the week with an entry of 1,478.

Cheviots (1,921) a larger entry, all classes much sharper and short of requirement, don’t forget the show on Tuesday 17th October. Top £100 & £90 Drycleuchlea, £93 Priesthaugh, £86 Wardlaw & Kinrive. Hill North Cheviots to £90 North House & Blakehope, £88 Clerk Hill.
