Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 9,502 store lambs and feeding ewes at their weekly sale at Longtown on Tuesday 17th October 2023.
A larger show and more buyers saw trade very strong for all classes, with prices easily maintained on the week. Top £121 for Beltex from Chapelton of Menmuir, Angus, others to £108 Sorbie, £106 The Ash; Texels to £107 High Hermitage, £106 Tara, £104 Hightown & High House; Suffolks to £109 & £105 High House, £99 Waterhead of Dryfe & Foulsyke; Dutch Texels to £99 & £95 Greenside (Dalton); Greyfaces to £103 Hill Brae & Drinkstone, £96 Hightown; Cheviot Mules to £95 Kirkhouse; Lleyns to £93 The Height; Jacobs to £80 Greenside (Bailey); Zwartbles to £79 Moor (Tyson); Hampshires to £80 Aar-Dar; Swaledales to £62 & £57 Hesleywell; Herdwicks to £45 Pokeskine.
Feeding ewes (816) still in strong demand, numbers wanted. Top £87 for Greyfaces from Hullerbank; Texels to £84 & £83 from High House; Cheviot Mules to £79 & £76 Archbank. Hill ewes to £86 for Cheviots from Archbank, £83 Auchenleck; Blackfaces to £60 Hareshaw; Herdwicks to £40 Isle of Man; Swaledales to £37 Gill Head. Cast rams to £127 for a Blue Texel from Chapelton of Menmuir.
At the special show and sale of Cheviots, there was a super entry of 3,684, quality was outstanding with trade also to match. Judging was in the capable hands of Norman Douglas, Catslackburn and Matthew Thomson, Pilmuir, who both done a fantastic job.
