Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts held their weekly sale of ewes with lambs at foot at Longtown on Tuesday 14th May 2024.
Included in the sale was the second show of hoggs with lambs at foot which saw a fantastic show of outfits to choose from. Taking the champion pen was a tremendous pen of 5 Texel x Cheviot Mule hoggs with Beltex x lambs from P.W. Hedley, Swinside Townfoot which sold at £180 a life. Top of the shop was a fantastic pen of Texel x hoggs with Texel lambs at foot realising £185 a life from J.H. & J.E. Taylor, The Harras. Texel hoggs with lambs at foot averaged £144 per life.
Mule hoggs with lambs at foot were very keenly sought after with the first prize pen of 10 with Suffolk lambs at foot realising £172 a life from Winter Bros Farming Ltd., Clickham Farm. Mule hoggs with lambs averaged £151 a life.
Suffolk hoggs with lambs also proving highly sought after with a pen of 5 with Texel x lambs at foot topping at £170 a life from the previously mentioned J.H. & J.E. Taylor, The Harras. Suffolk x hoggs with lambs averaged £145 per life.
A fantastic run of Scotch and North of England bred dry Mule hoggs from R. Smith, Glenzier Farming topped at £190 for a pen of 33.
A much larger show of ewe with lambs forward with a full ringside of buyers as grass starts to appear. Top of the day was a pen of 2 and 3 crop Texel x ewes with Beltex lambs realising £150 per life.

Store hoggs still very much in demand with plenty of purchasers still coming forward with two well bred Texel tup hoggs topping at £180 per head from George Sordy & Son, Alnham, Whittingham.
Feeding ewes also following the store hogg trend with plenty of buyers forward looking for sheep. Hill Cheviots topped the sale at £128 from Archbank Farming and cast tups to £142 for two Texels from George Sordy & Son, Alnham, Whittingham.
