Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report

C & D Auction Marts held their weekly sale of 6,075 Store Lambs on Tuesday 20th August 2024.

Store lamb numbers growing every week bringing more buyers to the ring side from all four corners of the United Kingdom, a larger show of long-term lambs forward this week with a shortage of best lambs around. Topping today was a tremendous pen of Texel x Ewe lambs from MJ Irving, Braehead Farm realising £148. Suffolks topped at £135 from LM Laing, Tarrasfoot for a pen of 111 lambs in the ring.

A smaller selection of feeding ewes forward met a sharper trade with plenty of purchasers on the hunt for feeding sheep many more could have been sold to vendor’s advantage. Topping today at £160  were Texel ewes from L Mcivor, Hartree Mill.

BREEDING SHEEP

1,082 breeding sheep were forward at the early breeding sale.

A fantastic show of quality first draw breeding sheep graced the ring at Longtown today, with demand as high as it’s ever been.

Included in the annual breeding sheep sale was a run of stock Mule ewes consigned by Cairness Ltd, Home Farm, Aberdeenshire. This stock of ewes were shown in fine form being seriously well bred, simply the finest stock of Mule ewes to be sold at Longtown in recent history. Credit must go to flock masters M/s Moir for the quality brought forward.

Topping the sale was a pen of outstanding Northumberland bred stock Mule gimmers consigned by Cairness Ltd, Home Farm, Aberdeenshire realising £250 with others to £228 and £220.

Texel gimmers topped at £235 for a pen of bonny Texel cross gimmers ex Cheviot Mule ewe consigned by M/s R Smith, Glenzier Farming, Canonbie, this good home also topped the English Mule section at £208 and also selling Cheviot Mules at £205. This noted run of sheep showed an improved return on the year of just over £25 per head.

Ewes were shown in full bloom being very good to sell topping at £228 for a pen of 1 & 2 crop Mule ewes again consigned by Cairness Ltd, Home Farm who also sold 3 & 4 crop Mule ewes to £212 on two separate occasions.

All breeding stock is in high demand and can be sold to vendor advantage. Our next mixed breeding sheep sale will be held on Wednesday 4th September 2024.
