Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their Annual Main Sale for Breeding Sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 17th September 2024, where there was a catalogue entry of 7,599.
Judging was in the capable hands of Mike Kay, Cheshire who after much deliberation duly awarded the champion pen to Messrs RW & SD Flintoft, Sourhope, Yetholm for their Greyface lambs ex Blackface.
The champion pen of lambs went under the hammer which sold to a full ringside of buyers, after frantic bidding the hammer fell at £240 to Messrs Mitchell, Mirkbooths, Raughton Head.
The first prize pen of Mule ewe lambs ex Swaledale ewe went to The Firm of Hugh Montgomerie, Assloss, Kilmarnock, which sold at £155.
At the conclusion of the sale the averages were well up on the year levelling at £150.40 (+£37.22 up on 2023) .
Top average of the day was £181.25 for a tremendous run of 84 lambs from B.D. & M.S. Hope, Mouldyhills.
Many more top draw lambs can be sold to vendor advantage at this thriving sale at Longtown with plenty of new faces came and purchased high end quality with an abundance of potential customers going home empty handed.

Also incorporated in today’s sale was the second sale of 1,314 Cheviot Mules, which again were in fine form being every bit as dear as the first sale, topping at £194 from H Douglas & Son, Howahill, Bonchester Bridge.
Lambs in general were smaller than the first sale but just as well-bred enticing purchasers to bid freely ensuring all lambs were sold to vendor advantage achieving a very pleasing overall sale average of £150.52 (+£33.81 on 2023)

857 continental and other breed ewe lambs were forward topping at £192 for Texel x Bluefaced Leicesters consigned by Messrs Beard, Dormansteads, Roweltown. Tupping lambs in high demand, with running lambs still meeting a nice trade throughout.
