Longtown Store & Breeding Sheep Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Ltd held their annual Border Horned Ewe Sale at Longtown on Wednesday 2nd October 2024, where there was a catalogued entry of 5,439.
Day 2 of the Border Ewe sale proved to be a success with the horned females being a scintillating trade throughout the sale.
First through the breeding sheep ring today was the Blackface gimmers, a reduction in numbers ensured that they met a flying trade with records being smashed. The pre sale show was kindly sponsored by the North of England Blackface Sheep Breeders Association and expertly judged by flockmaster Peter Heard, Yelland Farm, Devon. After some deliberation Mr P Heard awarded his Champion pen to regular vendors M/s Ballantye, The Lamperts, Gilsland. These worthy winners went onto to top the sale and break the breed record for the North of England Blackface gimmers at an eye watering £280, this fantastic run of outstandingly well bred sheep went on to achieve the top average of the day levelling at £250. Out with the show pens there was several lots breaching £200 with the North of England Blackface gimmers, in particular, being in massive demand.
Following the gimmers saw the annual sale of draught ewes. Judging was in the capable hands of another flockmaster, Ian Craig, who awarded his 1st prize rosette to the annual draught ewe consignment from Wanwood Hill, going onto realise £180.
Incorporated into this section of the sale was the dispersal of the Sourhope flock. M/s Flintoff, had the sheep in good bloom displaying their breeding prowess in full. Topping at today’s top price for draught ewes £190 on two separate occasions achieving a magical average of £168 for 312 sold.
Ewe lambs were next up, a very mixed show on offer with purchasers being very selective. Competently judged by Mr Kevin McGimpsey who was presented with very difficult task, finally awarding his first prize rosette to B Cheesbrough, realising £130.
