The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward
75 prime cattle, 47 OTM cattle, 5,059 prime lambs and
5,210 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday
27th November, 2008.
The trade in the prime cattle was the same as last
week. Top price of 176.5p, 173.5p for Limousin heifers from Hallburn
to W Kirkup, Butcher, Longtown and Border Meats, Lockerbie, others
168.5p Dykehead, 165.5p Hallburn, 164.5p Newtown, 163.5p Brydekirk
Mains. Belgian Blue heifers 168.5p Hallburn. Steers lacked quality
and sold to 164.5p for Limousin from Crookholm.
The OTM on offer met
a slightly sharper trade. Angus to 120.5p, 106.5p Waughslea; Charolais
119.5p Brisco Hill; Belgian Blues 101.5p Brisco Hill; Galloway heifers
115.5p Spout Bank; Holsteins 91.5p Roanstree.
Another large show of lambs with a faster trade for the better sorts,
with light lambs similar on the week. The 3487 lambs over 36 kilos
averaged 123p/kg and the 1,572 under 36 kilos averaged 118.2p. The
overall sale average being 121.8p. The sale was topped at £72.50
for Suffolk lambs from Messrs Graham, Barnglies and to 147p for Beltex
from Messrs Oliver, Waltonwoodhead. Other Suffolks to £66.80

A lighter show of cast ewes and rams saw a full ring
of buyers keen for sheep. Heavy ewes were £5-£8 dearer
on the week with the best hill ewes also firmer. Plainer half meated
