The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 81 prime cattle, 11 over thirty month cattle, 2,422 prime lambs and 3,108 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd July, 2009.

Prime cattle saw all classes cheaper on the week to a top of 188.5p and 173.5p for Limousin heifers from A. Irving, Toppin Castle; Charolais 170.5p Hallburn. Limousin bullocks from J.C. & D. Nicholson, The Gill sold to 175.5p and 168.5p.

Over Thirty Month cattle were in short supply and maintained late rates. Limousin cows to 152.5p Nunscleugh, 121.5p Englishtown; Blonde d’Aquitaine 125.5p Bonshawside. Holstein heifers to 115.5p Riddings Farm.

The 2,422 prime lambs were the largest show this year which sold to the usual ring of buyers and followed the national trend of less money to average 144.1p per kilo (exactly the same as the corresponding week last year).

The 2,081 lambs over 36 kilos average 143p with the 341 under 36 kilos averaging 152.7p. The sale was topped at £80 for Charollais lambs from Messrs Blaylock, Hallburn and to 197p per kilo for Texels from Messrs Edminson, Middle Farm. Another good show of 3,108 cast ewes and rams were dearer on the week, except for thick fat ewes. Smaller hill ewes were in short supply and in demand. More ewes could have been sold to advantage.
