The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward
67 prime cattle, 9 young bulls, 29 over thirty month cattle, 5,328
prime hoggs and 4,196 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at
Longtown on Thursday 7th April, 2011.
Yet another outstanding show of quality prime
cattle on offer and
a fantastic trade was had for all classes of cattle. Top price
of the day to 201.5p (twice) for Limousin heifers from A. & W.J.
Taylor & Son, Dashwell Green and A. Irving, Toppin Castle, bought
by Border Meats, Lockerbie and Jewitts Wholesalers. Mr A. Irving
sold 5 bullocks and heifers to average 194.5p and Mr Taylor sold
14 bullocks and heifers to average 188.5p.

An excellent show of 5,328 prime hoggs was forward to the usual
ring of buyers. Trade was flying all day creating a centre
record average of 243.9p per kilo (SQQ 246p per kilo). More
well fleshed hoggets could easily have been sold, but small hoggs
also were easy to sell.
Included in the sale was the Annual Show of Blackface hoggs which
was ably judge by Mr Haig Murray, Dunbia Ltd. The Championship
was awarded to Messrs J.P. Fisher, Smalmstown and later sold to the
judge at £121.50 for 48 kilos.

Smalmstown averaging £114.53. The sale was topped at
301p per kilo for Beltex hoggs from Messrs Eastham, Naddle Farm,
with a top per head of £136.50 for Texels from Messrs Wales,
