The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward
67 prime cattle, 6 young bulls, 23 over thirty month cattle, 8,036
prime hoggs and 3,353 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at
Longtown on Thursday 14th April, 2011.
A similar number of prime cattle with more dairy bred cattle on
offer maintained recent high rates. Top price of 204.5p went
to Mr. A Irving, Toppin Castle for an outstanding Limousin heifer
purchased by W Kirkup & Sons, Butchers, Longtown. Mr. Irving
also sold another to 201.5p purchased by Jewitt Meat Wholesalers
and averaged 195.5p for the five cattle he sold. Limousin bullocks
topped at 198.5p from A & WJ Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen.

A massive show of prime hoggs of all shapes and sizes were forward
to the usual ring of buyers. Trade for good meat remained very dear
for all weight ranges with 45kg + hoggs dearer on the week.
A large
number of small hoggs and store types were present resulting in the
overall average being a very respectable 233.6p per kilo for all
classes. 25.5 – 32 kg (1578) average 225.7p; 32.1-39kg (3121)
average 230.2p; 39.1- 45.5kg (2060) average 239.6p; 45.6+ (1171)
average 171.5p.
