PRIMESTOCK REPORTS


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 65 prime cattle, 7 young bulls, 35 over thirty month cattle, 2,233 spring lambs, 888 prime hoggs and 4,201 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 21st June 2012.

An increased number of prime cattle saw trade sharper on the week and a top price of 229.5p twice, firstly for a Limousin heifer show by J. & N. Blaylock & Sons, Hallburn and again for a Limousin heifer from J.F. & S.J. MacDonald, Ladyhousesteads. Limousin bullocks sold to 224.5p, 223.5p and 221.5p from A. & W.J. Taylor & Sons, Dashwell Green. Top price per head of the day was for a Limousin bullock 800 kilos @ 212.5p = £1,700, also shown by Messrs Taylor, Dashwell Green.

Young bulls again met an excellent trade and more numbers are required to fill buyers orders. Top price of 217.5p for a British Blue from J. Retson & Son, Gardrum.

A better show of OTM cattle saw a sharper trade throughout and topped at 171.5p for a Limousin stock bull from M.J. Irving, Braehead. Black & Whites sold to 170.5p from J.G. Vevers, Peterscrook, with Limousins to 168.5p from J.W. Vevers, High Stenries.

A larger show of 2,233 Spring Lambs averaged 202.5p per kilo (SQQ 203.6p), in line with this weeks trading. Surprisingly heavy lambs were sought after and short of requirements. Top of 230p per kilo for Texels from Old Rectory and to £108.50 per head for Texels from Woodhouse Hill, £104.50 Old Rectory and Upper Mains, £103.50 Old Rectory; Suffolk £106.50, £98.80 Upper Mains, £96.80 Spoutbank and Burnfoot on Esk; Zwartbles £96.80, £91.80 Woodhouse Hill; Charollais £95.80 Cardew Hall, £90.80 Horseholm, £89.80 Hallburn; Greyface £87.80 Brownleazes, £80 Bidlake; Oxford £87.20, £82.20 Guards; Berrichon £85.80 Moonspark, £75.80 Roseland; Leicester £80 Archerbeck; Blackface £74 Clonrae; Jacob £70.50 Cardewlees.

A smaller show of 888 prime hoggs forward with well fleshed hoggs of all weight ranges realising an excellent trade, 5p sharper on the week. The sale was topped at 194p per kilo for Texels from Cowcorse and to £87.80 per head for Suffolks from Brackenbrae and Texels from Castlenook, other Texels £87.50 Kirkhouse, £85.50 High Aketon; other Suffolk £87.80, £80.50 Brackenbrae; North Country Cheviot £84.50 Muirhouse; Bleu d’Maine £83.50 Stackbraes; Greyface £78.50, £78.20 Castlenook, £76.80 Chapel Farm; Jacob £77.50 Hudspeth; Blackface £76.80 Castle Nook and Far Howe, £75.50 Far How; Hill Cheviot £75.50 Somerton House; Herdwick £61.50 High Aketon.

Another good show of 4,201 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with trade sharper on the week apart from over fat ewes, hill ewes and small ewes still short of requirements. Rams demand premium prices and more could be sold to advantage.
