PRIMESTOCK REPORTS

The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 56 prime cattle, 10 young bulls, 31 over thirty month cattle, 5,463 prime hoggs and 2,848 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 4th April 2013.

More prime cattle on offer saw a busy ringside of bidders which ensured all classes were dearer on the week. The sale was topped at 256.5p for a fantastic British Blue bullock shown by J.C. & D. Nicholson, The Gill. Limousin bullocks sold to 250.5p and 248.5p also from The Gill. Messrs Nicholson had a run of bullocks to average 245p. Limousin heifers sold to 248.5p and 247.5p both sold by A. & W.J. Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen.

The 5,463 prime hoggs were a larger show on the week with a busy ring of buyers operating. The sale average was 211.1p per kilo (SQQ 212.4p) which showed a rise of 11p on the week. Best quality hoggs with flesh were keenly sought after by all buyers, plainer types easier with lightweight hoggs in good demand.

Heavyweight hoggs short of requirements at recent high rates. The sale topped at £132 per head for Texels from Messrs Renwick, Craig Douglas, Peebleshire with a top per kilo of 359p for Beltex from N.J. McQuiston, High Airyolland.
