Cumberland
and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart held their annual sale of Cheviot
Mule breeding sheep at Longtown on Tuesday 27th August 2002.
A larger entry than previous attracted a number of new buyers
as well as the many regular customers.
The overall average was up £10.50 on the year to level at
£52.70. Top price was £80 for a pen of 20 by the North
Country Ram from A & A B Graham, Barnglies, Canonbie, bought
by Messrs. Williamson, Callerton, Ponteland. Barnglies sold another
pen at £66.
Other North Country Cheviot Mules sold to £77 from Messrs
Cockburn, Kingside also to Messrs Williamson and £74 from
W & J Thomson, Hownam Grange to Messrs Graham, Miller Hill.
The Hownam Grange second pen realised £69. Barkbeth and Corrie
Hills sold to £64. Hill Cheviot Mules topped at £60
(twice) from IHG Warden, Skelfhill, £58 and £56 J Laurie
& Co, Carterton and £56 Cowburn Farms.
Cheviot Mule gimmer shearlings sold to £62 Greenhill and
£60 Dinley. Texel cross ewe lambs topped at £42 Carlenrigg
and Cheviot ewe lambs to £36 Twislehope.
Store lambs met another very strong trade and many more could have
been sold. Top was £39.50 for Texel crosses from Softley Farm
with crosses to £37.50 The Knarr and Cheviot Mule wedders
to £36.50 Cowburn.
