LONGTOWN LOWLAND BREEDING SHEEP


The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward a catalogue entry of 3,817 breeding ewes & shearlings and 42 rams their annual sale of Lowland breeding sheep at Longtown on Wednesday 31st August 2005.

Buyers were present from Thurso down to Devon, trade for correct ewes was very strong with prices on par to last year, correct belows met a limited demand.

Top of £68 for 2 crop Greyfaces from Kilncroft, Suffolk Mules from Mossilee and 4 crop Texel ewes from Port O Spittal. Suffolk cross Half Breds to £65 Stonehouse; Cheviot Mule £58 Mid Farm; Lleyn £48 Broom House. Other Texel ewes to £62, £60, £59 Port O Spittal and £58 Stonehouse (Irving); Greyface £52 Calvo, £51 Broomhouse, £50 Becklees, £49 Haithwaite, £48 Hallsoven and Greensburn.

Correct belows to £48 for Texels from Port O Spittal; Suffolk £43 Maxton; Greyface £42.50 Flex; Half Bred £40 Sceughdyke.

Shearlings were an outstanding entry and met a fabulous trade with prices dearer on the year. Top of £98 for Greyfaces from Sceughdyke, others sold to £94 for five pens from the same home. Other Greyface £90, £89 Leaona Villa, £88 Gapshield and Fieldside, £87 Hole of Lyne, £84 Auchleuchries; Cheviot Mule £81, £80 Wardhead; Texel £83 Criffeldene, £80 Greyrigg and East Middles; Lleyn £66, £65 Guards.

Rams met a keen trade for best sorts selling to £360 for Texel shearlings from Grayrigg who sold others at £200 (x2); Beltex £340, £230 Rosemount; Suffolk £210 (x2) Guards, £160 Calvo.
