The Summer Sale of Beef Shorthorn breeding cattle at Longtown on Monday 29th August 2022 featured the annual sale for the Beef Shorthorn Cattle Society followed by a dispersal of the major psrt of the Fieldhouse Herd for Mr F. W, Graham, Ilton, Ripon North Yorkshire.

Lot 32 Mr S C Currie sold for 4200gns

Top price on the day was 4,200gns given by A. Wilson & Son, Gordale Farm, Skipton for an exceptional second-calved poll cow, Beautry Dewdrop Nightingale with bull calf at foot from Mr S. C. Currie, Beautry House, Rathmell.  By Stonehills Jackpot out of Shawhill Dewdrop Fairlady, this 2019 female had a March-born bull calf at foot, Beautry Sherlock by Jodame Nobleman.

Lot 10 Reserve Champion from Louise Crowther sold for 2500gns

The sale was preceded by a show of heifers, ably judged by Ian Park.  1st prize in the maiden heifer class was Chapelton Waterloo 7317 from Messrs J. W. Biggar, Castle Douglas and 2nd in this class was Buckenhill Rosewood Robyn from Miss Louise Crowther, Bromyard Herefordshire.  Miss Crowther also took 2nd & overall reserve champion in the in-calf class with Buckenhill Rosewood Peggy and the 1st prize and championship went to Shawhill Shorthorns with Shawhill Foxglove Priscilla.  J.W. Frame stood 3rd in this class and H. & N. Sloan, 4th.

Lot 2 Champion from Thomson Roddick and Laurrie sold for 2400gns

The Shawhill champion, a Fearn Godfather daughter, went on to sell for 2,400gns to Messrs L. & G. Guild, Back of Laight, New Cumnock and the Buckenhill reserve champion, by Stanfordpark Libertine took 2,500gns from H. & K. Farms, Hoddam, Dumfriesshire who proved to be major buyers at the sale. The Chapelton 1st prize-winning maiden by Balnabroich Kermit was bought by Luke Anthony, Effledge, Kirkton, Lauder for 2,050gns.

In-calf heifers from H. & N. Sloan, Burnfoot, Lauder sold at 2,250gns and 2,000gns, both to Messrs Hyslop, Netherton with Charles Lowther, Nord Vue Farms at 2,100gns to Messrs Gray, Unthank; Alastair Gibson, Cutthorn to 1,900gns and Messrs Tailford, Lipwood to 1,850gns.

There was a consistent pedigree and commercial trade for cows and heifers with calves at foot with Fieldhouse Nightjar, a Gregors Loch Ness daughter with bull calf, from F. W. Graham`s herd dispersal, going at 2,100gns. to Messrs Benn, Irton, Holmrook.  The same price, 2,100gns was paid to R. & J. Byers, Whitehill, Brampton by A. Morton, Lochend, Denny for Gradi Margo by Rothesay Eildon, with heifer calf.  Messrs Byers also sold to 1,900gns and the Filedhouse dispersal sold others to 2,000gns (twice), 1,950gns and 1,900gns (twice); with D & M Wyllie, The Gill, Cummertrees at 1,900gns.

With 95% of the cattle sold, 28 cows and heifers with calves averaged £1,902, 19 senior heifers averaged £1,612 and 13 junior heifers £938.
