BORDER EWE SALE
The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart P.L.C.
had forward 8,772 ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs their Annual Border
Ewe Sale at Longtown on Wednesday 28th September
2011, comprising
5,566 Cheviots and 3,206 Blackface & Swaledale.
A larger show
of both Cheviots and Horned ewes attracted a crowded ring of buyers
from Aberdeen down to Devon, trade all day was very dear.
Top price in the North Country Cheviot ewe section was a record £202
and £200 for ewes from Messrs A. & W. Bell, Thomas Telford
Road, Langholm, others £112 Marwhirn, £108 Hillcrest, £105
Naddle. Gimmers to £180, £175, £150 Rosebank,
Coldingham, £142 Westhills. Ewe lambs to £122 Lanefoot, £92
Stonecroft, £90 Oakwood Mill. Ewes averaged £83.92,
a rise of £14.35. Shearlings averaged £142.23, a rise
of £42.23.
In the Hill Cheviot section, a new breed record was obtained when
the well known Castle Crawford ewes sold at £180 for a 62
lot with another pen at £112, others £95 Crossdykes, £90
Chanlochfoot, £88 Catslackburn. Gimmers to £76 Eastfield
of Wiston, £72 Fingland. Ewe lambs £90 Castle Crawford.
Average £76.63, a rise of £14.29.
As expected, the majority
of ewes were purchased by Welsh buyers with trade much dearer than
earlier sales.
Included in the sale
were two dispersals. The first, from Hopetoun
Estate, Glengeith,
Abington, this old established flock created a lot of interest,
selling to a top of £108 for two crops,
gimmers to £95, one crop £92, three crop £85,
four crop £80, ewe lambs £48.
The second dispersal came
from Braesteads Farm Ltd, Braesteads, Patterdale, Penrith, which
sold very well to a top of £82
for one crop, gimmers to £78, two crop £72, three crop £70.
In the Horned ewes department, centre records were again broken
when Messrs MacDonald, Bowershields, Bardon Mill sold Blackface
gimmers at £175, others £142 Wanwood Hill, £138
Taylorburn. Blackface ewe lambs to £82 Wanwood Hill. Blackface
draft ewes to £92 Tarnhouse, £90 Craigieburn and Blackburn, £86
Dalhanna. Swaledale gimmers to £128 Crookburn, £118, £114
Flosh Lodge. Swaledale draft ewes to £126, £122, £110
Naddle, others £120 Cottage Farm, £101 Baggarah Yeat.
All
classes of horned ewes were considerably dearer on the year. Average
of £74.77, a rise of £25.12.
Included in the sale was the dispersal of Blackface sheep stock
from Mr J. Fleming, Barnglieshead, Canonbie, which met a fantastic
trade with gimmers to £116, one crop £108, two crop £107,
three crop £83, four crop £81, ewe lamb £50 and
rams to £100.
A good quality show of over 84 North Country
Cheviot shearling rams were forward at the Annual Show
and Sale. Judging was in the capable hands of Mr Eddie Eastham,
Naddle Farm, Bampton, Penrith, whose awards were as follows:-
1st
and Champion – Messrs Runciman, Allanshaws, Stow, sold
at £600 to Grains Farming Ltd.
Reserve Champion – Messrs Graham, Carruthers, Waterbeck,
sold at £580 to Mr Dodd, Tundergarth Mains.
In general trade
was very good.
