STORE & BREEDING SHEEP REPORT


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart P.L.C. had forward 9,125 Store Lambs (including 3,512 Cheviots and 2,010 Blackfaces) at their Sale at Longtown on Tuesday 16th October, 2012.

Sale ringAnother massive show of lambs attracted more buyers from a distance as well as local farmers. Trade was sharper and they were easier to sell.

Top was £68.50 for Texels from Kelsocleugh and Glendinning, others to £68 Border Rigg. Suffolks £62 Mosshead, £60 Glentoo; Charollais £55 Shankbridgend; Greyfaces £56.50 Tecket, £54.50 Minto Kames & Dalefoot; North Country Cheviots £60 Rowhope, £56.50 Bradley, £56 Hownam Grange; Cheviot Mules £60 Priesthaugh; Swaledales £40.50 Border Rigg, £37 Roachburn, £36 Peghorn Lodge.

Cast ewes to £70 Allensgreen and cast rams £81 Allensgreen.

There was a record show of Cheviot lambs with trade brisk for all classes. Top £56 from Cossar Hill, £54 West Deloraine & Ropelawshiel, £53 East Redfordgreen & Windyhaugh.

The Blackfaces met an improved trade on the week. Top was £50 Little Tongue, £47 Fruid, £46 Auchengruith and Sweetshawhead.

An outstanding entry of 4,672 breeding sheep, where trade for all classes met strong demand. The 2,813 Cheviot, Blackface & Swaledale hill ewes, shearlings and ewe lambs sold at extreme rates to a packed ring of buyers, topping at £90 for 5 yr old North Country Cheviot ewes from Hethpool, others £78 Hethpool, £72 North Dean Head, £67 Catslackburn; Blackface £68 Penchrise, £66 Chapel, £60 Meikledale & Bayles; Swaledale £72 Border Rigg, £60, £58 Coldshield; Cheviot £82 Arkleton, £68Pightle, Drycleughlea & Meikledale.

Hill shearlings sold to £90 for Blackfaces from Wanwood Hill, others £85 Hoscote, £84 Chapel, £80 Hoscote; North Country Cheviot £88 Hethpool, £72 Hownam Grange, £70 Scarthlees; Swaledale £82 Bayles, £74 Dumblar Rigg; Lleyn £86 Bayles.

Hill ewe lambs to £84 for Black Cheviots from Cossar Hill, other Cheviots £60 Drycleughlea, £48 Glendinning; Blackfaces £62 Allensgreen, £51, £50 Blindburn; North Country Cheviot £50 Newlands; Swaledale £49 Border Rigg.

The 1,386 lowland breeding sheep were forward in all classes and young sheep maintained recent rates and keenly bid for to a top of £96 for Cheviot Mule ewes from Cossar Hill, others £75 Priesthaugh; Suffolk x £90 Gubberhill, Little Culloch & Main Street, £88 Bellbank; Texel £94 Main Street, £92 Loanend, £88 Little Culloch, £82 The Heugh & Damhead; Greyfaces £90, £86 The Flatt, £86 Main Street.

Shearlings sold to £120 for Mules from Shielsknowe who sold others £113, £106 The Side; Suffolk x £88 Bellbank; Texel £104 Loanend, £88 North Dean Head.

Ewe lambs to £96 for Mules from Temon, £90 Peela Hill, £88 Ramshope, £85 Winshield & Ramshope; Cheviot Mules £84, £77 Carterton, £68 Temon.

The Company also held a dispersal for Messrs Tinning, Burnfoot on Esk and a reduction for Nichol Farming the main prices were as follows:-

Mule ewes (2 crop) £135, £134, £114 Burnfoot, Mule ewes (1 crop) £119 Burnfoot, £94 Nichol Farming. Mule shearlings £110 Nichol Farming.
