BORDER EWE SALE


The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers’ Mart PLC had forward a catalogue entry of 9,517 head, comprising 4,313 horned sheep and 5,204 Cheviot ewes, gimmers and ewe lambs their Annual Border Ewe Sale at Longtown on Wednesday 2nd October 2013.

All sheep were well shown and overall an excellent quality show, and with buyers present from Aberdeen down to Wales and Devon trade was very good for all character lots although averages would be £10 back on the year.

Top in the Hill Cheviot section was £150 for a super pen from Castle Crawford who sold others at £100 (x2), next at £142, £122 and £110 Stirkfield, others to £92 Catslackburn. Shearlings to £100 Drycleughlea and £90 Nether Phawhope. Ewe lambs sold to £85 Potholm, £80 Wardlaw and £75 Stirkfield.

North Country Cheviots sold to a top of £175 for gimmers from Whitehouse, Swinside, others £140 and £130 Nun Cote Nook and £102 Hownam Grange. Ewes to £102 Marwhirn, £85, £82 Whitefield, £80 Sorbietrees. Ewe lambs to £75 (x2) for pens from Lanefoot and Stonecroft.

Border Ewe Sale

others £105 Longburgh Fauld and £95 Flosh Lodge. Ewes sold to £72 Baggra Yeat, others £66 Border Rigg, £65 Naddle and £62 Orthwaite Hall, £60 Fordlands.

Blackfaces to £110 for gimmers from Wanwood Hill, others £108 Crookburn, £99 High Staward, £98 Megdale and Longburgh Fauld. Ewes to £90 Derwent House, others £81 Blackburn. Ewe lambs to £90, £80 Wanwood Hill, £72, £70 Bowershield.

Included in the Blackface section was the dispersal from Messrs Amos, Broadhaugh, Hawick which met a tremendous trade with a top of £95 for 1 crop, £84 for 2 crop, £70 for 3 crop and £60 for 4 crop with an overall average of £77.01.

The Annual Show and Sale of 81 North Country Cheviot Rams was very capably judged by Mr Craig Bradbury, Satchells, Lilliesleaf whose awards were as follows:-

North Country Cheviot Ram

1st – Messrs Graham, Carruthers, sold at £850 to P. Edmondson, Seathwaite.
2nd – Messrs Runciman, Allanshaws, sold at £600 to P. Edmondson, Seathwaite.
3rd – Messrs Graham, Carruthers, sold at £800 to David Smith, Whiteknowe.

Quality rams met a strong demand and were short of requirements. Other prices were as follows - £820, £700, £680 Carruthers, £650 Nun Cote Nook and Philiphaugh, £580 Whiteknowe, £500 Hill Top and Allanshaws.
