Longtown Ladies Sale Report
Shearlings to 4,000 guineas. Ewe Hoggs to 3,200 guineas
The tenth annual “Longtown Ladies” sale of pedigree Texel and other breeding females was held on Monday evening, 8th January 2024.
There was a high quality entry which attracted much interest, both in the mart and on-line, with a very large crowd in attendance. The show was sponsored by William Armstrong Transport and judged by James and Ellie Amphlett from Worcestershire.
81 Texel gimmer shearlings sold to average £734 with 20 ewe hoggs levelling at £614 and 13 ewes at £428.
Top honours went to Messrs Boden & Davies` Sportsmans flock from Stockport, Cheshire with a prizewinning gimmer by Proctors El Presidente out of a Rheadr Best of the Best dam. In lamb to Knap General Lee, she went at 4,000gns to join Robert Coburn`s Knap flock.
The show champion came from the same Sportsmans pen, again by Proctors El Presidente and from a Deveronvale Ace of Diamonds ewe, this gimmer, in lamb to Knap Grumpy, sold for 2,200gns to the judges, James & Ellie Amphlett of the Topwood flock.
Alan Blackwood, Auldhouseburn, Muirkirk, had two sales of gimmer shearlings at 1,600gns, both to Donegal purchasers, an Auldhouseburn Expression daughter to Mr A Mackey, Dunkineely and a Seaforde Empire King daughter to Michael Gallagher, Corcreggan. Also at 1,600gns, Robert Cockburn, Knap, Perthshire sold a 3rd prize gimmer by New View Electrifying to A. Hambleton, Merkland, Thornhill. K. & R. Campbell`s Argyllshire based Cowal flock had a 1,500gns sale to D. & M. Scott, Redesmouth, Bellingham and other shearling gimmers sold to 1,300gns, Knap; 1,100gns, Milnbank and 1,000gns, Cowal and Auldhouseburn.
There was tremendous demand for the best quality geld ewe hoggs with a cracking pen, all by Haymount First Class, from James Hair, Drumbreddan, Stranraer selling to 3,200gns for the reserve champion, bought by Gordon Gray for his Ettrick flock. Others from this consignment went at 2,000gns, to Kenny Pratt`s Hilltown flock, Peterculter, at 1,500gns to Messrs Mosey, Gilling East, North Yorkshire and 1,300gns to the judges.
The sale included Texel dispersals of the Lintalee flock for Maurice Hardy-Bishop and the Wallace flock for June Scott. These attracted considerable interest with buyers from a wide area, topping at 600gns, twice, for in-lamb ewes.
Leading Texel averages were Drumbreddan, £1,696; Sportsmans, £1,477; Auldhouseburn £1,338; Knap, £1,193 and Cowal, £1,137.
Suffolk ewes sold well to average £657 with a top of 700gns from Ali Jackson`s Tiptop flock with Dutch Spotted in lamb gimmers to 1,300gns and 1,100gns from Louise Linton, Whitcastle, Corrie, Lockerbie.
