Show & Sale for The Cheviot Sheep Society

SOUTH COUNTRY CHEVIOT 2,200GNS. FEMALE RECORD

At Longtown on Tuesday, C & D Auction Marts Ltd. conducted the third annual show and sale of select breeding females for the Cheviot Sheep Society on Tuesday 20th February 2024.

With several Welsh bidders in attendance and other bidders from as far afield as Sutherland, the small but high quality entry of 26 attracted an enthusiastic response from the large attendance of breed supporters backed up by some strong online bidding.

Ewes averaged £845 (£621 in 2023), gimmers averaged £868 (£480 in 2023) and a single geld hogg made £336 (£315 last year).

Catslackburn Gimmer

Overall Champion sold for 1900gns from Catslackburn W N Douglas

The show was expertly judged by Gordon Jackson of Blackburn who selected as champion a one crop ewe from Messrs W. N. Douglas, Catslackburn, Yarrow.  Out of the £12,000 Catslack Halo and in-lamb to the £10,000 Crossdykes champion at last years Society ram sale, she went at 1,900gns to J. Pugh & Partners, Ty Talgarth, Mid Glamorgan.

Castle Crawford Gimmer

Top price 2,200gns Castle Crawford Gimmer from J Cochrane

Topping the sale was a gimmer from James Cochrane, Castle Crawford.  She was by Castle Hitman out of the dam of last years Longtown sale topper and in lamb to GDM Dundee (a Hindhope Cavalier son). She sold at a female breed record 2,200gns to E. MacMillan of Lurg and Townhead, Stirling. 

Mainside Farm Gimmer

Lot 16 sold for 1200 gns Mainside Farm WJC and SJ Weir

W.J.C. & S. J. Weir, Mainside, Hownam took 1,200gns for a two-crop ewe by Castle Assasin and in lamb to Catslack Weir`s Wonder who stood reserve at last year`s Highland Show. She was purchased by Lorraine Leuscher, Glendinning, Westerkirk.  Mrs Leuscher, in turn, sold the reserve champion on the day, a 700gns Castle Glendinning Harris gimmer, in lamb to Stirkfield Firefly.

There were three 1,000gns sales – a Castle Go-Getter gimmer from R. H. Paton, Castle Crawford to J. Anderson-Roskell, Raggiewhaite; a Catslackburn gimmer in lamb to the £12,000 Tweedshaws which went to William Nixon, Cooms, and a three-crop ewe by Becks On Top from T. Elliot, Hindhope which sold to Messrs Pugh, Gilar-Wen, Harlech.  Others sold to 850gns and 800gns for gimmers from Hindhope and Castle Crawford.
