Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 32 cattle, 5,246 prime hoggs and 3,343 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 2nd February 2017.
New sale time a tremendous success!
The 9.30am start saw two new faces at ringside, with a smaller show as several potential sellers were spectators. Harry and Geoff Gass led the way with a Limousin cow selling to 137p. Black Limousin x cows from Wanwood Hill sold to 120p, with dairy bred blues to 122p from the same home. Tanlawhill Farming’s weekly consignment were 4p dearer on the week, averaging 115p. Top price per head was £921.10 from Wanwood Hill. Dairy cows topped at 114p for a Shorthorn x from the James family, with working cows from Messrs Cowan selling to 102p. Top price per head was £723.90 from Midtodhills.
A small entry of prime cattle was topped at 218p for a Blonde bull from Harry and Geoff, who also sold a heavy steer to £1,292. A heavyweight 21 month old Limousin bull grossed £1,499.60 from Messrs Ewing, Dumbretton. Charolais heifers sold to £1,237.50 from Stuart and Tucker Armstrong.

A much larger show of 5,246 prime hoggs were forward for sale to the usual busy ring of buyers, which saw one of the largest shows of outstanding export weight, best quality Texel and Beltex hoggs seen in Longtown for many years, consigned from all over Scotland as well as many local vendors, with four or five buyers all keen to have their share of the best. Longtown is gaining a reputation for quality as well as numbers. Ordinary export lambs were firmer, with heavyweight hoggs similar on the week. Lightweight hoggs were also sharper and short of requirements.
Sale topped at 278p for wonderful Beltex hoggs from Messrs Hodgson, Moor Side, Brampton and top price per head of £109 for Texels from Snowhill Partners, Ericstane, Moffat. Sale averaged 173.8p (SQQ 179.5p).
