Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Ltd had forward 3,398 prime hoggs and 2,961 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 1st March 2018.

A smaller show of 3,398 prime hoggs than usual on account of the severe bad weather, all the usual buyers were present and very keen for supplies. Those vendors that braved the storm were rewarded with an handsome trade. Overall average 224p and SQQ 225p. Best Beltex and Texel hoggs again at extreme rates and short of requirement, selling between 280p to 300p per kilo to a top of 309p from Messrs Lines, Killocraw, Campbeltown.

Heavy hoggs again very dear with many pens selling between £120 and £130 to a top of £133 for Texel x hoggs from Messrs Jackson, Langdyke Cottage.

Export hoggs also sold to an extreme trade mostly selling between to 220p to 240p per kilo to a top of 309p from Messrs Lines, Killocraw, Campbeltown.

Light meaty hoggs sold readily between 210p and 220p per kilo to a top of 231p for a pen of Blackface hoggs from W. Skilling, Cara View, Campbeltown.

Cast ewes and rams were in half numbers due to the weather, again buyers were keen to buy with trade up £5 to £10 on the week. Many more could have easily been sold. 531 heavy ewes averaged £116.13 to a top of £161 for Texel ewes from Chaseside. Light ewes sold to a top of £80 for Cheviot ewes from Allfornaught. Rams sold to a top of £120 for Texels from Beckfoot.
