Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10 cattle, 720 spring lambs, 2,689 prime hoggs and 4,185 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 7th June 2018.

A small entry of cattle saw trade sharp and more required. Top of 140p for an Angus cow sold by M Jameson, Westhotbank, Hexham. Top price per head of £948 for a Black & White shown by T B Imrie, Harelawhole, Canonbie.

720 spring lambs were a larger show with all buyer’s keen. Trade was similar on the week with demand strong. Sale topped at £150 for Suffolk lambs from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries, others to £149 for Suffolks from The Lands and to 317p for Texels from G & L Hewitt, Cardewlees, Carlisle. Most lambs sold between 250p-300p per kilo and an overall sale average 266.4p (SQQ 267.7p).

Again, trade was two tiered with the best meated export hoggs all making 200p per kilo plus and to a top of 231p for Texel hoggs from JM Wharton & Son, Snade, Dumfries, and to £121 for Texels from Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Penrith, with the overall average being similar at 183.9p (SQQ 184.3p).

Light hoggs also in demand. Top was £63 for 30kg hoggs from MJ Lawson, Pasture House, Wigton.

Top of £170 for Texel ewes from BJ Harrison, Beck Farm, Wigton, with no fewer than 1,695 selling over £100 to average £117.05. Export ewes to £90 for Blackface ewes from C J Putt, Branteth, Canonbie with rams to £162 for Texels from Messrs Hewetson, Scales Hall, Wigton.
