Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 2,464 prime hoggs and 1,970 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 18th April 2019.

Cast cows again sold well with more needed for to satisfy weekly demand. Sale topped at 111p for a Belted Galloway from Messrs Bell, Croft House, Scaleby with Highland cows selling to £826 from A & J Riley, Whinney Brow, Roweltown.

A much smaller show of 2,464 hoggs, due to Easter, met a very strong demand from the usual large company of buyers. Overall average 207.3p (SQQ 225.3p).

Best quality hoggs still dear and to a top of 322p for Beltex hoggs Scott T Jefferson, Peartree Cottage, Wigton & TA Jefferson, Aspatria Hall, Aspatria.

Best Blackface and Cheviot light hoggs all sold between 225-235p per kilo and to 269p for Cheviots from G & R Dawson, Mount Pleasant.  Heavy hoggs saw a rise on the week with prices up £5. Top price per head of £132 for Beltex hoggs again from Peartree Cottage & Aspatria Hall. Suffolks to £100 The Keep, Greyface to £91 The Snab and North Country Cheviots sold to £107 Station Yard.

Light hoggs; of good meat, met a fabulous trade with many pens making between 225 -250p per kilo with a top of £78 for 32kg Herdwick hoggs from Auchengray Farms, Dumfries and to 254p for Blackface hoggs shown by WJ Douglas & Son, Upper Hindhope, Jedburgh.

The 1,970 cast ewes and rams were a smaller show again due to the forthcoming Easter, with all buyers to the fore, trade was much shaper with prices up £5-£10 on the week. 626 ewes sold over £100 to average £119.33 with an overall average of £91.04.

Top price of £167 for Texel ewes shown by A Atkinson, Croft House. Suffolks to £118 Beckfoot, Charollais to £134 also from Beckfoot, North Cheviots sold to £109 from Garth Farm and Greyface ewes to £88 from Sykehead. Hill ewes were exceptionally dear with a top of £88 for Cheviots shown by AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick, with Blackface ewes to £84 from H H Taylor, East Benridge, Morpeth. Swaledale ewes to £68 from J Pattie, Butterdales, Eastriggs. Cast rams to £120 for Texels from Beckfoot.
