Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,299 sheep comprising of 5,173 prime lambs and 3,126 cast ewes & rams and 16 cast cows at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 14th November 2019.
A good entry of cast cows continued to sell at recent rates with more required on a weekly basis. The sale topped at 115p for a black & white from Messrs Hewson, Jerriestown, Blackford with Herefords to 114p from A Taylor & Son, Hopestead, Eyemouth. British Blues sold to 110p from JP Lee, Morley Hill, Hexham. Top price per head of £877 for a Beef Shorthorn from Waterhead of Dryfe, Lockerbie.
A larger show of 5,173 prime lambs were the best quality entry for several weeks. Buyers very keen with trade extremely dear and an overall average of 191.6p (SQQ 195.1p), which was 8p on the week and being similar to other markets this week.
Export weight lambs sold to 266p for Beltex lambs from JL McMillan, Carse of Clary, Newton Stewart. Commercial lambs 190p plus all day with heavy lambs forward in large numbers and meeting a real trade, selling to a top of £115 again for Beltex lambs from J Scott & Partners, Fearn Farm, Inverness.
Light lambs also in very strong demand with Blackface lambs to 203p and 202p from Floors Farming, Kelso.

The 3,126 cast ewes and rams were a smaller show, with the usual buyer’s present, trade easily maintained last weeks high rates. 243 ewes sold at £100 and over to average £126.00p.
Heavy ewes sold to £180 and £176 for Texels from Aton Farms. Cheviot ewes to £73 from R Tweedie & Co., Buchtrig, Jedburgh with rams to £142 for Charollais from R Whittaker, Hunderlee Pastoral, Jedburgh.
