Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 4,282 sheep comprising of 330 prime hoggs, 1,671 prime lambs and 2,281 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 25th June 2020.

A smaller show of cast cows was forward with all classes continuing to sell at recent high rates. More numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer demand. The sale topped at 163p and 159p for Belted Galloways from P T Dayson, Whamtown, Blackford, who also achieved the top price per head of £1025.

Another solid entry of 1,671 prime lambs forward to a big ring of buyers, which ensured a fantastic trade for all classes. Light lambs 32kg-37kg and heavy lambs 45kg + in short supply and receiving a premium. Numbers wanted for next week’s sale. 

The sale topped at 293p for a fantastic pen of Beltex lambs consigned by M &M Byrne, Thornthwaite Close, Wigton with top price per head of £131 for Texel lambs from A R Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.

Overall average 239.0p (SQQ 238.8p)

Cast ewes are improving week on week, with light ewes maintaining recent high rates. Over fat ewes getting the biggest lift, whilst the best bred Texels proved very good to cash. 

Topping the sale at £188 were Texel ewes from Marygate, Berwick with hill ewes selling to £81 for Swaledale ewes from Bidlake. Rams sold to £150 for Texels from Seymour Farms, Seymour House, Wigton.
