Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 3,939 sheep comprising of 682 prime hoggs, 1,275 spring lambs and 1,982 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 10th June 2021.

Another nice entry of cast cows forward, with a competitive trade met for all classes. More numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. Topping the sale at £1,146.75 was a Limousin cow from GOM Famelton, Horseholm, Gilsland, which also achieved top per kilo of 166p. Angus cows to 144p from A Taylor & Son, Hopestead, Eyemouth.

A larger show of 1,275 new season spring lambs. A super show of lambs, full of meat, forward to a full ringside of very competitive purchasers ensuring all classes were well bid for. Heavy lambs proving the trade of the day again, with many pens surpassing £170+. Heavy lambs, best Beltex export and best Beltex small lambs are still in massive demand whilst commercial export lambs were easier on the week. numbers wanted for next week’s sale.

Top price per kilo of 371p for Texel from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries. Top per head of £194 for Texels from HG Woodmass, Harene, Linstock.

Overall average 319.8p (SQQ 316.4p)

A smaller show of 682 prime hoggs were forward. Well fleshed hoggs sold to recent high rates, with leaner hoggs harder to cash.

Topping the sale per kilo at 290p for Texels from G Shankland, East Raffles, Dumfries, who sold sold Texels to 270p & 265p.

Top price per head was £155 for Texels from R Sanderson, Smerral, Caithness & TN & F Cowan, The Ash, Roadhead

Overall sale average 216.9p (SQQ 225.2p)

A similar show of 1,982 ewes were forward. All classes were a similar trade to last week’s blistering rates of return and more required on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing customer base.

Heavy ewes topped at £214 for Texels from HG Woodmass, Harene, Linstock.

Hill ewes topped at £125 for Cheviots from Wynholm Farms, Wynholm, Lockerbie, who also sold Cheviots to £115.

Rams in massive demand again being short of purchaser requirements topping at £202 for Texels from Messrs Phillips, Netherhill, Roadhead, who also sold Texels to £195.
