Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 6,077 sheep comprising of 4,750 prime hoggs and 1,327 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 6th April 2023.
Cast cows continue to sell at recent high rates with buyers keen for numbers and more required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand. The sale topped at £1,969 for a British Blue from RJ Lines, Killocraw, Campbeltown with Beef Shorthorns to £1,337 from J Anderson & Partners, Rowanburnfoot, Canonbie.
Top price per kilo of 206p for Belted Galloways from JR & CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Lockerbie with British Blues to 203p from Killocraw.

A smaller show of 4,750 prime hoggs were forward. Top price per head of £178 for Beltex shown by JM Wharton & Son, Snade, Dunscore.
Top per kilo of 425p for a pen of fantastic Beltex hoggs consigned by NJ McQuistin, High Airyolland, New Luce.
Lightweight hoggs again proved very lucrative to sell, as a fantastic run of 571 predominantly Blackface hoggs topped at 301ppk, averaging a mighty 292ppk consigned by Messrs Thornhill, Haresteds Farm, Lyme Park, Cheshire.
Heavy hoggs showed big improvements on the week with many pens surpassing £160. All classes of hoggs are wanted for next week’s sale and potential consignors are urged to contact our auctioneers for further enquiries and entries.

A smaller show of 1,327 cast ewes and rams forward. As predicted numbers have tightened and trade is markedly dearer across the board. A larger show will be presented for next weeks sale and with customers queuing round the block to purchase ewes at Longtown, now is the time to sell for maximum return.
Texel ewes topped at £295 from J & C Hastings, Kopje, Dumfries.
Hill ewes to £118 for Cheviots from J Paterson & Son, Corriehills, Corrie and D MacKinnon, 1 Largie, Tayinloan.
Rams sold to £212 for Texels from Seat Hill Ltd, Seat Hill, Laversdale.
