Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 8,972 sheep comprising of 3,576 prime lambs and 5,396 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 17th August 2023.
A larger and improved show of cast cows was forward with trade remaining similar. A fantastic run of cows from N McBurney, Balsalloch, Girvan sold to a top of £1,396, £1,346, £1,296 for Limousins with Angus cows selling to £1,281. Longhorns sold to £1,045 from A Roskell & Partners, Laverhay, Moffat. Top per kilo of 198p (x2) and 194p from Moorfields. More cast cows are required on a weekly basis here at Longtown to fulfil buyer demand.
A similar show of 3,576 prime lambs forward to a competitive ring of purchasers ensuring all classes again were keenly bid for being in front of most centres on this day, albeit slightly easier on the week.
The sale peaked at 335p for Texels from R Millar, High Cattadale, Campbeltown.
Top per head of £180 for a Texel from first time vendors M/s W Robson Farm Ltd, High West House, Tow Law, who sold a very good run of well finished commercial lambs.
M/s Tomlinson, Sunniside farm, sold a run of seriously well-bred heavy lambs, topping at £144, with his run of 109 averaging £132 for 46kg.
All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

A much larger show 5,396 cast ewes and rams were forward and handled with ease and way short of purchaser requirements. An increased ring of 16 active purchasers operating on 59 accounts ensuring all classes were keenly bid for being the most competitive ring of purchasers in the country. 33 pens or 97 ewes sold over £210 and 684 ewes sold over £150 stamping Longtown’s reputation as the only place to market your ewes.
Texel ewes topped the sale at £300 on three separate occasions firstly from M/s W Graham & Son, Craigdarroch, Sanquhar for two pens of pure bred Texel ewes this run of outstanding ewes went on to average a staggering £276.66 and Beckfoot for a single pure bred Texel ewe respectfully.
Suffolk ewes topped at £188 for a penful of hefty ladies consigned by M/s Smith, Crumhaugh Hill, whose consignment of Texel and Suffolk ewes averaged an unprecedented £199.81.
Heavy Mule ewes were a joy to sell topping at £144 for a pen of huge Northumberland bred Mules consigned by regular vendor M/s Teasdale, Grindon Hill, Hexham. An abundance of mules eased over £120.
Heavy ewes were way short of purchaser requirements and can be sold to vendor advantage weekly here at Longtown.
An increased entry of hill ewes were forward with leaner hill ewes proving harder to place whilst full meated lightweight ewes were still in big demand.
Hill ewes topped at £125 for Cheviots from K & E Anderson, Mid Harrietsfield, Canonbie and from AR Bell & Son, Kirkton, Hawick.
Rams sold to £230 for Charollais from Viewley.
