Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 11,246 sheep comprising of 4,397 prime lambs and 6,849 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 19th October 2023.

An improved offering of cows forward and again the better quality fleshed cows proved more in demand, and plainer sorts being harder to place. The sale topped at £1,401 and £1,396 for Limousins from Wanwood Partners, Wanwood Hill, Alston with Beef Shorthorns selling to £1,125 from AJ Gibson, Cut Thorn, Newcastle. Top price per kilo of 194p (x2) from Wanwood Hill.

A larger show of 4,397 prime lambs forward with over 1,700 of them being hill lambs and mules. Fed lambs proved to be in big demand whereas grass fed lambs saw some resistance. Heavy lambs and best export lambs were the trade of the day and in short supply, with numbers of well fed lambs required on a weekly basis to satisfy demand.  

The sale peaked at 384p for Beltex lambs shown by M/s J Carr & Son, Camphill, Barrasford.

Top per head of £220 for a Suffolk from M/s Thomlinson, High House, Derbyshire.  

All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

All roads lead to Longtown as customers flock from all corners of the British Isles as another bumper show of 6,849 cast ewes and rams went under the hammer. All classes slightly easier on the week as more numbers become readily available nationwide. Heavy ewes still wanted regardless of breed and also the best texel ewes in short supply. Numbers are handled with ease at Longtown as an extensive ring of purchasers are here every week guaranteeing a competitive trade. A serious entry of over 3,500 Blackface and Cheviot ewes showing the weather were present, and heavy ewes in short supply and are keenly sought after for next weeks sale.
