Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 10,077 sheep comprising of 5,096 prime lambs and 4,981 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday 23rd November 2023.
A much larger offering of 40 cast cows and bulls were forward to an increased ringside of competitive buyers, seeing trade sharper on the week. The sale topped at 207p for Angus from CR Foster & Partners, Ashfield, Lochgilphead with top per head of £1,409 for Angus cows from Tanlawhill Farming, Lyneholm House, Westerkirk.

Another large show of 5,096 lambs were forward to full contingent of purchasers ensuring all classes were keenly bid for. Heavy lambs and best export lambs that had been fed were particularly in demand and short of purchaser’s requirements. Under finished lambs met some resistance. More runs of fed lambs can be sold through this center to benefit vendors returns.
The sale peaked at 386p for Beltex lambs shown by Messrs Maxwell, Faughhill, Melrose.
Top per head of £168 for Dutch Spotted from K Graham, Orchard Farm, Hawick.
All classes of well finished lambs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand as numbers increase so do purchasers. Please do not hesitate to contact your auctioneers who will be pleased to take your calls.

Another fine show of 4,981 ewes were forward with all classes being firmer on last week’s high rates of return.
Texel ewes topped the sale at £270 from Newbigging, with numerous others breaking £200 and proving way short of purchaser requirements.
Mule ewes showed some improvement with plenty of heavy ewes breaching £108 topping at £118 for a pen of hefty ladies consigned by M/s Longlands, Tonehall, Hexham.
Hill ewes showed improved rates topping at £114 for Cheviots from TW & E Tennant & Son Ltd, The Shaws, Newcastleton. Whilst Blackface ewes reached £100 consigned by M/s Hodge, Craighead, Abington, for the first time this season. Plenty of heavy Blackie ewes selling between £75 - £85.
Rams again in big demand selling to a top of £210 for Suffolks from Gelston Castle Farms, Boreland of Kelton.
