Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,526 comprising of 5,518 prime hoggs and 4,008 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 1st February 2024.

A smaller offering, yet a good show of cows forward to a competitive ring of buyers. The sale topped at 210p for Angus cows from G & J Archibald, Craigens, Isle of Islay, who also sold others at 201p. Whitebred Shorthorns sold to 194p from T & MJ & TR Johnson, Greenley Cleugh, Hexham. Top price per head of £1,648 and £1,632 from Craigens. Numbers are required on a weekly basis to fulfil buyer demand here at Longtown.

Another bumper show of 5,518 hoggs were forward to a full ringside of 19 active purchasers ensuring all classes met a big demand being short of purchasers requirements.  

Hoggs topped at £200 for Suffolks from CD Scott, Falla, Jedburgh. Per kilo the sale topped at 394p for Beltex hoggs from MJ Irving, Braehead, Eaglesfield.

Overall average 303.3p (SQQ 307.8p)

All classes of well finished hoggs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand, as numbers increase so do purchasers. A smaller show of 4,008 ewes were forward again to full ringside of 21 purchasers, ensuring all classes were markedly dearer on the week.

Texel ewes topped the sale breaking the £300 barrier for the third week running, topping at £315 consigned by Newbigging. Others to £300 from the same good home.  

Hill ewes proved very good to sell topping at £126 for Cheviots from JG Eddie & Sons, Hallhill, Montrose. Plenty of pens of strong Blackies trading between £82 - £88, topping at £94 consigned from Minsca.

A bumper entry of 231 rams topped at £185 for Texels from T Bean & Sons, Shield Farm, Co Durham.

Big powerful tups proved in short supply and are keenly sought after.
