Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,533 comprising of 4,290 prime hoggs and 3,243 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 14th March 2024.

A small show of hill cows were on offer, with trade remaining similar for all classes. The sale topped at £1,309 and £1,071 for Angus cows shown by TN Cavers & Co., Sorbie, Langholm. Belted Galloways to £1,063 from J Johnstone, North Howes, Annan with Whitebred Shorthorns to £1,047 from G Jackson, Toftholm, Newcastleton. Top price per kilo of 173p from North Howes and others to 170p from Sorbie.

A smaller show of 4,290 hoggs were forward, trade is simply biblical, the prices speak for themselves!! Keep them rolling through the doors and be heavily rewarded. Hoggs topped at £330 for Texels from AJ Watret, Pendicle, Ruthwell with 694 hoggs selling at £200+

Top per kilo of 503p for Beltex shown by J Carr, Camphill, Barrasford.

A smaller show of 3,243 ewes were forward and easily maintained last week’s high rates of return with the exception of Blackie ewes that took another rise of £8-£10. More ewes can be sold on a weekly basis to vendor advantage.  

The sale topped at £300 for Texel ewes from IF Murray, Shepherds Cottage, Lowick.

Hill ewes to £148 for Cheviots from J Common & Son, Crossdykes, Corrie with Blackface ewes to £134 from Haliburton Farm, Kelso.     

Rams topped at £220 for Texels from WN Douglas, Catslackburn, Yarrow.
