Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 9,712 comprising of 6,160 prime hoggs and 3,552 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 4th April 2024.
A larger show forward with meated cows scarce and mainly hill types on offer. The sale toped at 244p for a Blue Grey from WD & R Elliot, Burnfoot of Ewes, Langholm with Montbeliards to 234p from J & F Earnshaw, Achamore, Isle of Gigha and Salers selling to 209p from RW Steel, Chestnut House, Thursby. Top per head of £1,390 for Blue Greys from Burnfoot of Ewes, Salers to £1,359 from A Mclean, Killeonan, Campbeltown who also sold Simmentals at £1,313 and Luings at £1,211. Angus topped at £1,242 from J & AJ Smith, Drumalea, Kilkenzie. Montbeiards to £1,158 from Achamore and Galloways peaked at £1,012 from Ardnaw Farms Ltd, Argyll.
A much larger and very mixed show of 6,160 hoggs was forward, sold to an increased ring of purchasers ensuring a very buoyant trade throughout. All classes of well fed hoggs, regardless of weight, proved very good to sell with all vendors leaving Longtown highly delighted with their days trading.
Top per kilo of 537p for Beltex shown A Taylor, Heathery Hall, Lanark which also topped the price per head at £285.
All classes of well finished hoggs are wanted here at Longtown on a weekly basis to satisfy an ever-growing demand, as numbers increase so do purchasers. A larger show of 3,552 ewes was forward all classes selling to an unprecedented demand again all vendors left longtown highly delighted with their days trading. Many more can be sold to vendor advantage and are keenly sought after on a weekly basis. Trade is expected to maintain these very high returns for next weeks sale.
