Longtown Primestock Sale Report
C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 7,257 comprising of 4,056 prime hoggs, 53 spring lambs and 3,148 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 2nd May 2024.
Cast cows remain in demand with more numbers required on a weekly basis to fulfil demand. The sale topped at £2,025 for an Angus from J Carruthers, Woodhall, Eastriggs, with British Blues selling to £1,396 from J Graham & Son, Orchard Farm, Hawick. Other Angus to £1,306 from R Moscrop & Son, Border Rigg, Bewcastle with Herefords topping at £1,225 from J & LA Baxter, Monk, Hexham. Top per kilo of 194p from Orchard, with Angus to 188p from Border Rigg and Herefords to 180p from Messrs Copeland, Nether Colinhurst, Ecclefechan.
A select show of spring lambs sold to a top of 458p per kilo for Texels shown by R Johnston, Kimmeter Green, Annan with top per head of £230 for Texel lambs from Beckfoot.
More spring lambs are required on a weekly basis. Early entries are appreciated.
A much larger and very mixed show of 4,056 hoggs were forward well fed smalls and export hoggs still remain in high demand. Heavy commercials and under finished hoggs met some resistance. Todays sale average is just short of 100ppk Infront of the same sale last year with a similar number of sheep being sold.

Top per head of £235 for Texels from TC Jackson, Langdyke Cottage, Ecclefechan.

A larger show of 3,148 ewes were forward selling to recent high rates of return, all classes remain very well sold and customers are urged to take advantage of the currant trade available.
The sale topped at £280 for Texel ewes shown by HM Livestock, Shethin, Ellon.
Hill ewes sold to £140 for Cheviots from Solwaybank Farm, Canonbie and for Blackfaces from R Scott, Bankend, Langholm.
Rams to £250 for Texels from Beckfoot and Charollais from Messrs Harrison, Sykehead, Hethersgill.
