Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward 4,314 sheep comprising 1,872 spring lambs and 2,442 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 1st August 2024.

Cast cows proved scarce due to the weather, although trade remains competitive and more required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand here at Longtown. The sale topped at 193p for Shorthorn cows shown by Meikle Whitriggs Farms, Corrie who also sold Limousins at 190p. Galloway sold to 175p from J Tullie, Fenwick, Hawick. Top per head of £1,302 from Meikle Whitriggs.

A smaller show of 1,872 lambs forward to another increased ring of purchasers ensuring all classes sold to maximum returns, totally eclipsing Mondays local trade. Topping the sale was returning vendor Messrs CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft with Beltex lambs realising £220 for Beltex lambs, also achieving the top price per kilo at 454p again for Beltex.

Mule weathers topped at a colossal £159 consigned by Messrs Hope, Mouldyhills, Canonbie and to 325p consigned by Messrs Charleton, Whiteside. First draw Blackies from this good home weighing in at 39kg realising £123.

All breeds and grades are a joy to sell at Longtown and numbers are required on a weekly basis.

A smaller show of 2,422 ewes and rams were forward due to weather conditions. All classes selling to extreme rates being £25-£30 per head up on Mondays trade, proving there is only one auction in the North of England to market your ewes as Longtown comes up ahead of the pack once again.

No fiction, all facts and the prices speak for themselves. Keep the numbers coming to Longtown in order to maximise returns. More could definitely be sold on a weekly basis to meet purchaser requirements.

The sale topped at £305 for a Texel ewe shown by WK Duthie, Woodside of Chapelton, Brechin.

Mule ewes peaked at £186 from GP & EA Coates, Beckhall, Canonbie.    

Hill ewes sold to £142 for Cheviots from T Mackenzie, Drumreach, Inverness with Blackface ewes selling to £136 consigned by WS Robson & Co., Yatesfield, Otterburn.   

Rams to £245 for Texels from CD Scott, Falla, Jedburgh and for Charollais shown by J Wales, Thackwood, Raughton Head.
