Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward a tremendous entry of 7,051 sheep comprising of 2,573 spring lambs and 4,478 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 15th August 2024.

A mixed offering of cast cows and bulls forward, yet all classes remain in demand with more numbers required to satisfy buyer demand. The sale topped at 223p for Whitebred Shorthorns from G Bell & Co, Bloch, Langholm, who sold others to 216p. South Devons peaked at 216p from J Thomson & Partners, Howcleugh, Hawick. Top price per head of £1,328 for Devons also from Howcleugh, who also sold Charolais to £1,289. 

A similar show of 2,573 lambs forward. A very mixed show of lambs, with leaner lambs harder to place and are certainly better marketed on a Tuesday here at Longtown in the store market. Well finished lambs sold to recent high rates of return being short of purchaser’s requirements. Many more well finished lambs can be sold to vendor advantage.   

Topping the sale at 371p was Beltex lambs shown by D Smith, Scobshaugh, Kirriemuir with top per head of £178 for Texels from CJ Roots, Kilnford Croft, Dumfries.

A smaller show of 4,478 ewes and rams were forward, hill ewes and leaner freshly spained ewes were again forward in great numbers selling to brisk trade whilst heavy ewes still sold to extreme rates being in huge demand and numbers well short of purchaser orders. More ewes can be sold on a weekly basis to vendor advantage.

The sale topped at £290 for Texels from M & SJ Bell, Hensol, Kirkcudbright.

Suffolk ewes topped at £198 consigend by Messrs Coulthard, Low Hallburn, Longtown.

Mule ewes topped at £186 for a penful consigned by Messrs Jardine, Newbigging, Lockerbie.  

Hill ewes sold to £140 for Blackfaces from R Halbert, Prospect House, Haltwhistle.  

Rams to £255 for Texels from G & CE Edminson, Middle Farm, Crindledyke.
