Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward a tremendous entry of 7,105 sheep comprising of 3,045 prime lambs and 4,060 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 29th August 2024.

A larger show of cast cows forward, trade remains similar although leaner weathered cows meeting some resistance. The sale topped at £1,568 for an Angus from M Baxter, Kilnhill, Gilsland with Friesian cows to £1,378 from CT & J Wigham, Hethermill, Kirklinton. Beef Shorthorns peaked at £1,313 from Meikle Whitriggs, Lockebie with other Angus to £1,312 from EAP Glendinning, Over Cassock, Eskdalemuir. Top per kilo of 189p for Angus from Kilnhill, with Shorthorns to 189p and 180p from Meikle Whitriggs, Friesians sold to 185p from Hethermill.

A similar show of 3,045 lambs forward, consistency is key and Longtown has it in spades, todays average includes a run of 75 Shetland tup lambs weighing in at 19kgs. Commercial lambs regularly achieved 310-320ppk with best Beltex lambs 360ppk – 400pp. An outstanding Beltex lamb topped the sale at 440p Consigned by DH McKendrick, High Dalrioch, Campbeltown with top per head of £210 for Texels D & T Bradley-Farmer, Wester Parkgate, Dumfries.

Lambs are in demand and showing large quantities of lambs are wanted at here at Longtown.

A larger show of 4,060 ewes and rams were forward, as Longtown has been centre stage all week, it didn’t stop today, top of the tree again putting the jack back in his box. New and old vendors alike flock to Longtown to take advantage of the competitive marketplace provided by the 19 active purchasers that attend C&D Auction Marts weekly. Trade serious for all classes of heavy ewes being miles in front other centres earlier in the week. Leaner ewes sold to improved rates as feeding orders come into operation, many more required to fulfil an increased demand.

Mule ewes topped at £174 from DA & MA Teasdale, Grindon Hill, Haydon Bridge.    

Hill ewes sold to £120 for Blackfaces from R & WD & SR Charlton, Whiteside, Haltwhistle.   

Rams to £240 for Texels from CH & H Robson, Dale House, Ninebanks and for Suffolks from RK & MD Denby, Riddings Hill, Moat.
