Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 9,275 sheep comprising of 5,052 prime lambs and 4,223 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 7th November 2024.

Another good show of cows on offer, consisting of mainly hill bred types. All classes met a brisk trade throughout, as always, more numbers are required on a weekly basis to satisfy demand. Take advantage of the capped commission and payment on the day. The sale topped at £2,314 and £2,129 for Charolais’ shown by A Reid & Co., Glendearg, Eskdalemuir. Luings sold to a top of £1,871 from T Renwick & Son, Craig Douglas, Yarrow with Galloways to £1,699 from J Tullie, Fenwick, Hawick. Top per kilo of 197p from Glendearg with others to 190p from Craig Douglas.

A similar show of 5,052 prime lambs were forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers ensuring all classes took a big lift of 25ppk on the week, being over 45ppk up on 2023. Fed lambs regardless of weight or grade proved very good to sell and way short of purchaser requirements. Numbers are required on a weekly basis to satisfy demand.     

Beltex lambs topped the sale at 447p from A Taylor, Heathery Hall, Lanark.

Top price per head of £198 for Texels from JR & CJ Ward, Whitstonehill, Lockerbie, who also sold Beltex at £193 per head.

A smaller show of 4,223 ewes and rams were forward, which included a huge show of hill ewes, these being the trade of the day seeing a lift of over £10 per head. Very few pure bred Texel ewes on the ground being way short of purchaser requirements. Commercial ewes sold to recent high rates of return. Keep them coming to receive premium prices.

The sale topped at £280 for Texels from SA Lawson, Huntly Lodge, Huntly & Beckfoot Farms.

Beltex ewes were a big trade topping at £270 for a super ewe from Messrs Robson, Yatesfield, Otterburn.

Cheviot ewes sold to £128 from Messrs Hepburn & Co., North House, Hawick.

Blackface ewes sold to £120 on two separate occasions consigned by Messrs Robson, Yatesfield and

Messrs Manning, Dirnanean, with plenty of blackie ewes trading £92-£102.

Rams to £200 for Beltex from Nether Green.
