Longtown Primestock Sale Report

C&D Auction Marts Limited had forward an entry of 7,811 sheep comprising of 4,511 prime lambs and 3,300 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown Mart on Thursday 21st November 2024.

A smaller offering of cast cows forward, trade remains buoyant with a larger show expected next week. Numbers are required on a weekly basis to satisfy buyer demand. The sale topped at £1,253 for an Angus from J Jackson & Son, Cumstone, Lockerbie with others to £1,139 from RW Telfer, Spadeadam, West Hall with top per kilo of 179p and 178p respectively.

A larger show of 4,511 prime lambs forward to the same ring of competitive purchasers operating on several new accounts ensuring all classes sold to a buoyant trade throughout. Especially smalls and export weights, which were in very high demand and way short of customer requirements. This will be the case for the coming 3 weeks and vendors are urged to keep them coming. Heavies maintained recent high rates of return.

These returns have only been available in the second half of the week providing the benefits of receiving a premium price for your commercial stock selling on a Thursday. More well finished lambs required to satisfy demand.       

The sale topped at 368p for Beltex lambs from High Wells with Texels to 367p from GR Scott & Son, Corneyside, Matfen.

Top price per head of £192 for Texels from G Ralston & Son, Linton, Morebattle with Charollais also selling at £192 shown by DA Manson, Larel, Caithness.

A similar show of 3,300 ewes and rams were forward to 17 active purchasers operating on 61 accounts. The prices speak for themselves and it was apparent, as the sale commenced that the trade of the season was upon us. More required on a weekly basis to satisfy customer demand.

The prices listed below prove that there is only one place to market cast ewes and that place is Longtown, every Thursday. Longtown is renowned as the most competitive and consistent auction to market your stock always putting farmers first. 

The sale topped at £415 for a tremendous Texel ewe from Marygate Farms, with this run of phenomenal ewes averaged a staggering £278. A further 27 ewes sold in excess of £300.

Suffolks peaked at £232 from GS Shaw & Co., Smailholm Mains, Kelso.

Mule ewes from the same good home topped at £178 with this run of huge scotch bred mule ewes achieved an average of £162.

Hill ewes topped at £142 for Cheviots consigned from RH & JR Little, Park Nook, Bewcastle.

Blackfaces ewes soared to £120 on three occasions from Newbigging Farms, E Thorburn & Son, Pitland Hills, Wark and A Carruthers & Son, Peela Hill, Bewcastle.

Rams to £245 for Texels from AM & L Sutherland, Carran, Thurso.
