The Cumberland & Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward
70 prime cattle, 39 over thirty month cattle, 6,621 prime hoggs and
4,312 cast ewes & rams at their weekly sale at Longtown on Thursday
12th April 2012.
A large show of prime cattle with a mixed show of quality saw trade
lift once again and top was 243.5p for an outstanding Charolais heifer
which is a new centre record, shown by J & N Blaylock & Son,
Hallburn and purchased by W Kirkup & Sons, Butchers, Longtown,
closely followed by 240.5p for a British Blue heifer from A Irving,
Toppin Castle and purchased by J Little. Limousin bullocks peaked
at 229.5p from JC & D Nicholson & Son, The Gill and purchased
by W Kirkup and Sons, Butchers, Longtown and British Blue bullocks
sold to 227.5p shown by A & W J Taylor & Son, Dashwellgreen,
also purchased by W Kirkup & Sons.

There was an excellent show of 6621 prime hoggs with
a massive amount of 2540 hoggs over 48kgs. This making the overall
sale average 203p/kg but the SQQ for hoggs in spec was a satisfying
216p/kg.

Wester Parkgate and for Texels from Station Road and to 261p/kg for

Also held today was the annual show and sale for both Blackface
and Swaledale hoggs kindly sponsored by A W Jenkinson and Border
Vets respectively and ably judged by Mr. Michael Bowe, Keswick.

The
champion Blackfaces was awarded to a pen of 42kg from Messrs Henderson,
Cleughbrae which realised £91 to the judge. The
reserve Blackfaces went to a pen scaling at 53kg from Messrs Jardine,
Yett realising £94.50 to Pak Mecca Meats. 2nd in the lightweight
class went to E Smith, Westhills, scaling 38kg and realising £82
to Bowood Farms, 2nd in the heavy class went to Messrs JP Fisher,
Smalmstown scaling 49kilos and realising £90 to R J Vevers.

The
Swaledale section was won by Claremont Properties, Hayclose scaling
at 39kg and realising £80 to M Lomax, with second going to
E Smith, Westhills scaling 38kg and relising £78 also to M
Lomax.

Another excellent show of 4312 cast ewes and
rams were forward at
a time where numbers are at a low all over. The whole sale averaged
a record £104 per head all included and was topped at £186.50
